How we help
Help comparing requirements
Affordable housing in Texas is split across dozens of housing authorities and hundreds of communities. Each one has its own rules. And renters get stuck for reasons that have nothing to do with whether they qualify.
Zillow, Apartments.com, and Craigslist rarely mark income restricted units or let you filter for them. So you end up cold calling leasing offices, one after another.
You can't tell which lists are open, how long they are, or if the property even took applications this year. There's no one place to check.
HUD and TDHCA publish new numbers each spring, and they vary by metro and household size. Someone who qualified last year might not qualify this year.
Every application has its own fee, and it’s usually gone once screening starts. Apply at a few places that don’t fit your income or screening, and the fees pile up with nothing to show for them.
Texas lets most private landlords decide whether to take vouchers. A listing that says “vouchers welcome” may not take yours, or may rent above what your housing agency will approve.
Many tax credit properties also set a minimum income, usually a multiple of the rent. A household on SSI or another fixed income can be under the limit and still fall short of the minimum. Some properties drop it for voucher holders.
Tax credit apartments, vouchers and public housing have different application routes. Use our guides to understand the program and the questions to ask its provider.

We discuss your search and check which community requirements fit your situation. The property or agency determines the applicable income limit and eligibility.
